What Happens if you Break a Bone?

If you break a bone, there’s a good chance you’ll need to have the broken bone put into a cast. The cast is made to protect the broken bone and keep it in alignment while it heals. Sometimes you will need surgery for very bad breaks. The surgeon may put in screws and plates to keep the bone together. You will usually be in a cast from six to twelve weeks to allow the bone to set.

When you come out of the cast the affected area will be weak and stiff.

Physiotherapy Treatment for Fractures includes:

  • Crutch Walking
  • Minimising swelling
  • Use of a sling or brace if necessary
  • How to maintain movement in unaffected bones and joints
  • How to cope at home, work and sport while your fracture is immobilised
  • How to remain fit and strong while your fracture heals
  • After immobilisation how to regain movement, strength and function

If your fracture is due to Osteoporosis, Physiotherapy Treatment can help you with this also.
