Are falls a common cause of injury?

Yes, 1 in 3 adults over 65 years who live at home will have at least one fall a year, and about half of these will have more frequent falls. A fall can lead to broken bones, hospitalisation, loss of confidence and independence.

Always try to prevent or treat weak bones (Osteoporosis or Osteopenia). Eat well and include calcium and Vitamin D in your diet to improve your bone health. This will lead to less fractures if you do fall.

How can I prevent myself falling?

  • Stay strong by doing regular exercise
  • Practice balance exercises
  • Wear well fitting shoes
  • Avoid rugs or mats around the house
  • Have good lighting in your home
  • Have your eyesight checked regularly
  • Reduce the amount you carry at one time
  • Put non-slip mats in the shower and bathroom
  • Mop up spills
  • Remove clutter
  • Get advice from your local Physiotherapist
